Child Support Order Guidance

The retirement System is periodically notified of the establishment of a Child Support Order applicable to a member of the plan, which has been established in accordance with applicable Iowa statute. (Iowa Code Chapter 252D, Title 45 Code of Federal Regulations 303.6 and 303.100)
Description
The notification, which is received from the Iowa Department of Human Services (or a corresponding agency in another State) or from an Iowa District Court, directs the retirement System to initiate child support withholding of a specified dollar amount from a member’s retirement pension. The funds are forwarded by the retirement System to the notifying agency. The System is obligated by law to honor these requests and the laws that govern them. The member is notified of the dollar amount and when withholding will begin. Child support withholding ends only upon receipt by the System of a notification from the Department of Human Services or the District Court that originated the withholding. Withholding cannot be terminated or modified by the System solely upon the member’s request.
