Earnable Compensation Definition
Also known as "compensation earnable," is the annual compensation that a member receives for services rendered as a police officer or fire fighter during the course of employment with a participating city in Iowa. Contributions made to a deferred plan of compensation that are made by a member from the member’s earnable compensation are included as part of earnable compensation.
Earnable compensation does not include the following:
- Overtime compensation;
- Meal or travel expenses;
- Uniform allowances;
- Fringe benefits;
- Severance pay; or,
- Any amount of compensation received in payment for accumulated sick leave or vacation.
