TO OUR CITY OFFICIALS REGARDING COVID-19

Paid Sick Leave Granted by Families First Coronavirus Response Act Considered Earnable Compensation

MFPRSI has received questions regarding 411 coverage of paid sick leave granted under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act. It is our understanding the sick leave is paid in accordance with regular payroll periods like other paid time off. Therefore, the sick leave granted by the Families First Coronavirus Response Act is considered earnable compensation under Iowa Code Chapter 411.   

MFPRSI does not provide guidance on how cities should interpret or apply federal law. MFPRSI encourages cities to read the new statute and any additional COVID-related legislation closely and work with their HR departments and professional advisors to determine what type of leave is required and how that leave should be treated for tax and other purposes.
